Fearing God Is the Starting Place

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction. 8 Hear, my son, your father’s instruction And do not forsake your mother’s teaching; 9 Indeed, they are a graceful wreath to your head And ornaments about your neck.” Proverbs 1:7-9.

I completely understand that ‘fear’ here does not mean AT ALL a fear that promotes anxiety, but a fear that promotes respect, awe, and wonder. Therefore to respect, have awe for and wonder of the Almighty is the point at which one begins to learn knowledge of Him and practice the same in life. For without His instruction all that we do in life will not succeed. This does not mean that wealth and riches demonstrate God’s knowledge and wisdom, not at all. There are some very, very poor and very, very illiterate people I have personally known whose lives have demonstrated greater knowledge and wisdom in this life than the wealthiest and most powerful people I know of. Why? Because their lives have been draped in the fear of God and His blessings of knowledge, and their lives demonstrated the same. There IS a difference.

The Beginning of the End

Please note that “Fools despise wisdom and instruction” from God. The verses that follow verses 8-9 give us a different picture of what takes place in the lives of sinners; those who despise God’s wisdom and instruction. That picture is dark and ugly and their end is horrible. Look at what Solomon writes in verses 27-29, “When your dread comes like a storm And your calamity comes like a whirlwind when distress and anguish come upon you. 28 “Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently but they will not find me, 29 because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the Lord.”

God is not and will not be found by those who despise Him. Some will not search for Him in difficult times, but others will. Those who do decide to seek after Him may discover this, “Then they will call on me, but I will not answer…” Some have said that ‘silence is golden,’ but this is not true when Creator God remains silent because some ‘did not choose the fear of the Lord’ but rather chose their own foolishness and find that ‘their calamity comes like a whirlwind.’

God Has a Better Solution

This is not my idea nor my suggestion, this is God’s instruction. “Hear, my son, your father’s instruction And do not forsake your mother’s teaching; Indeed, they are a graceful wreath to your head And ornaments about your neck.” Proverbs 1:8-9.

We live in a very tension-filled time of existence, but this really is not different than any one moment in days gone by. Politics and world events are more present because our world today is media-driven that has resulted in mass fear; nearing panic. But, we now have, as always, our God’s instruction found in the inerrant Word of God. We are told to ‘Hear, my son, your father’s instruction…do not forsake your mother’s teaching’ which, in this case, are from God Himself.

Jesus said, “31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” John 8:31-32. We MUST continue in His teaching, in His word of truth that will not fail to satisfy our present needs.

Yes, this virus upon us is causing much consternation and confusion because we do not, as a public, fully comprehend what is taking place. Our government leaders are doing all they know to do to help, but voices of confusion are prevalent as well. But just as the Psalmist has written in the 23rd Psalm, our Comforter is present in every step of the way BECAUSE He lives in the life of every Believer.

Jesus is Lord.
