One Last Time

No doubt, the United States of America is like a wind-up clock coming to the end of a winding cycle. The spring is no longer able to force the gears inside the clock to move the longs minute and hour hands to point to the minutes and hours of the day. So is America, unless some incident happens, the clock will soon grow silent.

So it is with President Trump’s time in office, the mantle clock has run its course and his 4 years are now ending. Nothing can happen to change the flowing course of history, the spring has unwound and the ‘tick-tock’ is about to sound the last time for Mr. Trump. The new President will soon be sitting in the Oval Office…for good or bad.

Jesus came to that moment Himself for his time on earth did come to a very harsh and difficult moment as He said, “It is finished,” and He died. Jesus “gave up the ghost.” He left earth and went to sit at the right hand of the Father, but Jesus sent the Holy Spirit, the Comforter to take His place.

Though this is not the same kind of thing, a replacement for Trump is to take his place as he leaves the White House, but only a replacement. In the moment of the Resurrection of Christ, Jesus was replaced by Himself for the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are God, the God-head. But in the case of the next President of the United States much will change but the changes are not equal in any way. In the case of the coming of the Holy Spirit, everything changes, but in effect, everything remains the same…God remains in place.

The time for Jesus to be crucified approaches just as God knows and Jesus begins to prepare His disciples for the coming week, the week of Passion, the Passover Feast in Jerusalem, “Now on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and said, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?” He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is near. I will observe the Passover with my disciples at your house.” So the disciples did as Jesus had instructed them, and they prepared the Passover.” Matthew 26:17-19 NET2.

In the Synoptic Gospels we read about the details providing information as to the importance of the coming event. That place, the Upper Room is to be prepared with specific instructions from the Christ even though they had no idea that evening would be so important for each of them and for us who would follow.

“Now on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus’ disciples said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?” He sent two of his disciples and told them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. Wherever he enters, tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples? He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.” So the disciples left, went into the city, and found things just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.” Mark 14:12-16.

“Now when the hour came, Jesus took his place at the table and the apostles joined him. And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves. For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” Then he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”  And in the same way he took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.” Luke 22:14-20.

It is important to take notice of the phrase, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer…” It is interesting that Judas Iscariot is at the table as Jesus spoke these words. Iscariot is suddenly filled with the presence of Satan, takes his piece of bread and leaves to betray Jesus with the words of suffering flashing across his mind. What a heavy burden he took with him in the moment of betrayal.

Each time you and I participate in the “Lord’s Supper,” or the “Eucharist” our moment with the Living Savior floods our souls with the memory of what the disciples must have felt at that moment, but there is more. Symbolically, we are inviting the presence of the Risen Christ to flood our heart with His Presence once again and we are reminded, “Listen! I am standing at the door and knocking! If anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come into his home and share a meal with him, and he with me. I will grant the one who conquers permission to sit with me on my throne, just as I, too, conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. The one who has an ear had better hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’” Revelation 3:20-22.

Obviously, there is no comparison between the transition of power represented on what is to come on January 20th and the awesome symbolism represented by the Lord’s Supper. For we find Jesus knocking at the door of the human heart desiring to share His cleansing Presence with every Believer. We must be prepared to receive Him, to sit down and eat with him, in the upper rooms of our lives.

Followers of the Christ must set aside the politics of the moment as the ‘Change of the Guard’ takes place on the steps of the Capitol Building on January 20th even though politics in the ugliest of forms will have taken us there. But, because we who are Believers understand something different, we must therefore receive the change with grace even though enormous disagreements do exist.

Jesus is Lord.
